J.R.R. Tolkien

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, born in 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa, was the most influential fantasy author of the 20th century. A professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford University, Tolkien’s academic work in philology and his fascination with mythology deeply influenced his literary creations. His masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, published between 1954 and 1955, along with The Hobbit (1937), established Tolkien as the father of modern high fantasy. His intricate world-building, creation of fictional languages, and exploration of themes such as good versus evil have had a lasting impact on the fantasy genre. Tolkien’s works have sold hundreds of millions of copies and have been adapted into award-winning films, cementing his legacy in popular culture.
