弗雷德里克·萨克里德·雷明顿(Frederic Sackrider Remington)是美国多才多艺的艺术家,以笔下活灵活现的美国西部题材创作闻名于世。他 1861 年生于纽约州坎顿,年少时便深深痴迷边疆风土人情,这也成为贯穿其创作生涯的核心主题。其创作领域横跨油画、插画、雕塑与写作,是十九世纪末美国艺坛极具才华与影响力的重量级人物。
雷明顿曾就读于耶鲁大学美术学院,但相较静物写真,他更热衷体育运动。1880 年父亲离世后,他选择离校(耶鲁大学后于 1900 年向其颁授荣誉学位)。次年一场前往蒙大拿领地的夏日旅行点燃他对美国西部绵延一生的热忱。
他凭借插画创作迅速崭露头角,长期为《哈勃周刊》(Harper's Weekly)等刊物供稿。1882 年,他首幅专业商业插画 —— 一幅描绘怀俄明牛仔风貌的作品正式刊出。雷明顿善用饱满灵动、极具张力的笔触刻画牛仔、美洲原住民、军人形象与西部辽阔壮丽的自然风光,广受业界赞誉。他的作品兼具浪漫情怀与写实笔触,生动还原旧西部风貌,捕捉这片土地独有的精神气质与冒险气息。
在成为知名战地画家后,受艺术家弗雷德里克・鲁克斯图尔(Frederick Ruckstuhl)启发,雷明顿决定尝试雕塑创作。他的第一件雕塑作品《驯马者》(The Broncho Buster ,1895 年创作模型)就奠定了其美国雕塑大师的地位。2017 年,其《穿越黑麦》(Coming Through the Rye,1902 年创作模型)在佳士得以 11,223,500 美元成交,不仅刷新艺术家拍卖纪录,也创下二战前美国雕塑作品的世界纪录。
1923年,弗雷德里克·雷明顿艺术博物馆在其位于纽约州奥格登斯堡的故居落成。馆内藏有最为丰富的雷明顿作品,包括大量绘画、素描与雕塑,以及他的个人收藏与书信往来,令人们得以更深入了解这位艺术家及其艺术视野。
