The following six lots comprise maps that were originally part of other copies of the Neptune françois (see previous two lots). Lots 62-65 are four maps by Romein de Hooghe, the famous Dutch artist who was at that time in the service of William III of England. They were commissioned by Pieter Mortier for the second part of his Amsterdam-published Neptune françois, which is complete with only nine de Hooghe charts. Although deriving from British charts, de Hooghe’s artistic flair, decorative flourishes and the excellence of the engraving led Koeman to declare: ‘this small number represents the most spectacular type of maritime cartography ever produced in 17th century Amsterdam.’Lots 66 and 67 are maps from the first part of Mortier’s Neptune François, and are piracies made in collaboration with Hubert Jaillot. As Koeman discovered in his research, Mortier re-engraved the plates after the original French prototype Neptune françois by Charles Pène and others in a richly coloured version and added to the titles the words 'Levée et Gravée par Ordre du Roy à Paris 1693', though they were in fact engraved, coloured and published in Amsterdam by Mortier. All bar lot 65 are lavishly hand-coloured, almost in the style of paintings, with extravagant use of thick body colour, and details heightened in gold.
