The russet-iron rooster and hen constructed of numerous hammered plates joined inside the body, allowing the necks, tips of the wings and the beaks to move, the head with finely detailed comb and feathers and the eyes gilt; signature on the backside

They are the work of a modern metal artist, Tanaka Tadayoshi, known for his articulated iron figures of the Taisho and early Showa periods. Tadayoshi apprenticed in the Kyoto workshop of Takase Kozan (1869-1934), who directed the mass-production of ornamental iron pieces for both domestic and international markets. The largest number of iron figures known bears the name of Muneyoshi, although comparatively few of these represent fowl.
