Having trained as a painter, Marinot exhibited with the Fauves. He became fascinated with glass in 1911, when he visited the Viard brother's glassworks. Initially he enamelled the glass but quickly turned his attention to the glass itself, which he learnt to work himself. "After a decade of studying the 'rules' of glass-blowing...Maurice Marinot began to break them" (Marie-France Boyer, 'Snap, Crackle & Pop', The World of Interiors, June 2009, p. 85.) His mastery lies in his ability to control air inclusions and colour within the glass, as well as in his surface finishes. By 1925 and the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes, Marinot had won international recognition for this innovative exploration of the medium. He had many followers such as André Thuret and on a larger commercial scale with the Daum Frères, who adapted his ideas and effects.
