Note du spécialiste

This pastel depicts Madame Helleu looking at the drawings by Watteau from the d'Ymecourt Collection in the Louvre. Helleu particularly admired the work of Jean Antoine Watteau; he had drawings by him in his own collection, and was strongly influenced by his trois crayons technique of drawing in sanguine, black and white.

We are grateful to Les Amis de Paul-César Helleu for confirming the authenticity of this work, which has been registered in their archive as n°: APCH PA-628.
