Specialist note
The companion to the present dish, also from the Edward T. Chow Collection, was sold at Sotheby Parke Bernet Ltd., Hong Kong, 25 November 1980, lot 27.
Compare a similar dish decorated in blue and white in the interior and wucai on the exterior of slightly larger size (21.8 cm.) illustrated by R. Krahl, ed., China without Dragons: Rare Pieces from Oriental Ceramic Society Members, 2016, pp. 282-3, no. 168, where Krahl notes that the stylization of the flower on the interior is typical of Zhengde period (1506-1521) design, but that the way the fish on the exterior are painted with red outlines over yellow enamel is typical of the Jiajing (1522-1566) period.
