Specialist note

James Johnson Sweeney organized the significant African Negro Art exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1935. The show consisted of 603 objects borrowed from collections all over the world. The museum hired Walker Evans to photograph 477 of the exhibits and to produce 17 sets of these prints bound in four portfolios. The present lot is one volume from Sweeney's own working set.
