Specialist note

Dr Joachim Pissarro has confirmed that this drawing will be included in the forthcoming Catalogue raisonné of drawings by Camille Pissarro.

This drawing has been requested for the Pissarro exhibition taking place at the Visconti Castle Stables in Pavia, Italy, in Spring 2014.

According to Dr Pissarro, the drawing was executed in connection to Camille Pissarro's socio-critical album Turpitudes sociales, 1890, and is related to no. 16 in the album, La misère en chapeau noir. It might originate from his sketchbook no. XXI which contained studies connected to this project. The final album included reproductions of 28 drawings, revealing the artist's sympathy with the anarchist movement in France.
