Specialist note
This picture gained its French appellation,Le Fumeur Flamand, from the title given to an engraving made after it by Renée-Elisabeth Lepicié in 1744. In this time the painting was in the collection of M. Bellanger, Subsitut de M. le Procureur du Roi in Paris, who coincedentally also once owned Le Cuisinier Flamand by David Teniers II, offered here today (lot 116) and where Lepicié made an engraving after in 1748. A version of this painting with slight alterations was with Goudstikker, Amsterdam in 1928.
The present lot is offered with a copy of a letter of authenticity from Dr. Marget Klinge, who believes the painting to have been executed during Teniers' Antwerp period.
