with signature and date 'R auf der Maur fecit ao 1728' and identifying inscriptions (on the reverse of the unlined canvas), in a gilt frame

Specialist note

An ambiguous inscription on the reverse of the canvas suggests that the sitter might be Franz Pfyffer von Altishofen and that this work was in the possession of Francesco Corragioni d'Orelli, a doctor from Locarno, who had moved his family to Lucerne in 1706, where his descendants continued to exercise the medical profession throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
