Specialist note

The Marshelsea Prison, in Borough, served as a debtor's prison from 1329 until it closed in 1842. It is perhaps most remembered now for its connections with Charles Dickens whose father was imprisoned there in 1824, and who made it the setting for much of his novel Little Dorrit.
