ORLANDO BALLS (LATE 17TH CENTURY)
Colchester Castle
signed 'Orlando Balls Delt.' (lower right)
watercolour on vellum
6 1/8 x 9 in. (15.5 x 23 cm.)
Together with a charcoal drawing of a castle in a landscape, signed 'G.Pevrot' (lower right); a pencil sketch of ruins in a landscape; an Alum Sands picture of Carlsbrook Castle; an 18th century woolwork sampler of a house in a landscaped garden; a provincial school oil painting of a church in the grounds of a Palladian Villa and an early 19th century English watercolour of a gate on watermarked paper for 'Whatman Turkey Mills' (7)

Specialist note

The present depiction of Colchester Castle probably dates to the late 17th century as it shows the castle in a damaged state. The town and castle suffered heavy cannon fire during the English Civil War in the summer of 1648.
