In the Maiolica style, of baluster form, the knopped neck painted with flowering vine and flanked by upright foliate scroll handles applied with gaping masks, finely painted with putti emblematic of either water or air, on a conforming socle and octagonal base

Specialist note

Looking to Italian maiolica works for inspiration, Berlin began producing 'Majolika' wares of this variety in the 1860s and displayed examples at the 1862 International Exhibition in London. Compare the example sold in The Great Exhibitions Sale, Sotheby's, London, 31 October 2006, lot 538.
