AN INDIAN MULTI-NICHE PRAYER DHURRIE
EARLY 20TH CENTURY, DECCAN

22 ft. x 7 ft. 3 in. (670 x 221 cm.)

Specialist note

This monumental multi-niche prayer dhurrie, or saf may have originally been commissioned for an idgah (the open space used during the id al-kabir, birthday of the Prophet, and id al-fitr, end of Ramadan). The use of blue and white has spiritual and mystical significance, being closely linked to the state of sama reached in prayers (see op cit., p. 149).
