Specialist note

In 1956 H.R.H. Prince Philip invited Seago to accompany him on the return trip of a World Tour on Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia. Seago joined the yacht in Melbourne following the Olympic Games and travelled via the South Pacific, the Antarctic Peninsula, the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, the Atlantic Islands and on to Gibraltar.

Seago gave the Antarctic paintings to Prince Philip at the end of the voyage but retained the reproduction rights so that he could recreate the scenes on his return. The present picture was one of the in situ sketches painted on board Britannia and was purchased from the daughter of a member of the Royal Household, who accompanied the Prince on the expedition.
