Robert Mangold (né en 1937) est un peintre américain dont l’approche précise et minimaliste a fait de lui une figure centrale de l’abstraction d’après-guerre. Né à North Tonawanda, dans l’État de New York, Mangold a étudié au Carnegie Institute of Technology avant d’obtenir son master en beaux-arts à l’Université de Yale, où il a été exposé au formalisme rigoureux de la peinture moderniste et aux innovations de l’expressionnisme abstrait. Sa formation initiale lui a inculqué une attention rigoureuse à la composition et aux proportions, qui allait définir son engagement de toute une vie envers la géométrie et les relations spatiales.
L’œuvre de Mangold se caractérise par des compositions sobres et rectilignes qui explorent l’interaction entre la ligne, le plan et la couleur. Il utilise fréquemment des formes répétées, de subtiles variations de teintes et des plans qui se chevauchent pour créer une tension visuelle à la fois ordonnée et énigmatique.
